Legislative Council to Deliberate on National Development Agendas


Bandar Seri Begawan: The First Meeting of the 21st Legislative Council session for 1446 Hijrah/2025 is set to begin on Wednesday, 27th Syaaban 1446, corresponding to the 26th of February 2025. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will deliver a titah and inaugurate the Official Opening Ceremony. Prior to this, the Legislative Council, or LegCo, will convene to review and endorse the Minute of the First Meeting of the 20th Legislative Council Session held last year. Following the Official Opening Ceremony, the session will resume on Thursday, 27th of February at 9:30 in the morning.



According to Radio Television Brunei, this year’s session will focus on the National Development agendas through queries and deliberations. The Supply Bill for the Financial Year 2025/2026 will undergo three stages before being approved and gazetted for use beginning on the 1st of April. The session will be chaired by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council, with assistance from Doctor Dayang Hajah Huraini binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hurairah. The Legislative Council serves as the country’s highest discussion forum, bringing together Ex-Officio Members, Titled Persons, Persons Who Have Achieved Distinction, and District Representatives. It aims to unite the interests of the people and the Government through policy deliberations focusing on sustainable economic development and inclusive social policies.



The Legislative Council session is open to the public, and those interested are encouraged to attend the proceedings at Dewan Persidangan, a day after the Official Opening Ceremony. A translation service to English is available upon application 24 hours in advance. Educational institutions are also invited to bring students as part of their exposure to the legislative process. Visit applications must be submitted in writing to the 21st Legislative Council Secretariat at least five days prior to the intended visit date.



For those unable to attend, daily session recordings will be broadcast via RTB Perdana and RTB Sukmaindera at 9 in the evening for the morning session, and 11 at night for the afternoon session. Official documents, including Hansard, Minute of Meetings, and Order of the Day, are accessible at ‘councils.gov.bn’, with updates also available on the official Instagram, ‘@legcobrunei’.



Visitors and attendees are reminded to adhere to the rules and guidelines, including appropriate dress code and procedures when entering Dewan Persidangan.
