Laoag – This Ilocos Norte capital triumphed in the Region 1 Athletic Association Meet held on Saturday, capturing an impressive tally of 79 gold, 53 silver, and 68 bronze medals. Laoag was also recognized as the Most Organized delegation, while Candon City received the Most Disciplined award. The city's athletes excelled in individual sports including arnis, gymnastics, taekwondo, and tennis, securing their position as the top medal earner.
According to Philippines News Agency, Laoag's victory marks a significant improvement from last year's third-place finish, attributing the success to rigorous preparation and a focused effort to claim the number one spot. Keon, who previously led the Project Gintong Alay sports program under the Marcos Sr. administration, emphasized his ongoing commitment to sports development. During the opening ceremony on April 22, he stated that the city government is dedicated to nurturing young talents, promoting youth development through sports, and fostering a culture of excellence.
As the champion city, Laoag will send the most athletes from Region 1 to the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, which will be hosted by the province. Following Laoag in the medal count were Pangasinan II in second place, Ilocos Norte in third, and Ilocos Sur in fourth.
