John Mark Tokong Secures Consecutive Victory at Siargao International Surfing Cup
SIARGAO ISLAND – Siargao’s own John Mark Tokong clinched the championship title in the Men’s Category at the 27th Siargao International Surfing Cup, marking his second consecutive win at this prestigious event held at the Cloud 9 Surfing Site in General Luna.
According to Philippines News Agency, Tokong scored 16.2 points in the final round on Wednesday, surpassing Joh Azuchi of Japan, who scored 10.95 points. Tokong’s victory follows his triumph in the previous year’s tournament, the 26th Siargao International Surfing Cup. The international surfing competition, which commenced on October 25, attracted over 100 professional surfers from across the globe. The event is a Qualifying Series (QS) 3000 event, recognized by the World Surf League.
Anon Matsuoka of Japan secured the championship in the Women’s Category with 12 points in the final round, besting Nilbie Blancada of Siargao Island. Following his successful title defense, Tokong has advanced to 12th place in the WSL Asia rankings.
In anticipation of the Taiwan Open of Surfing QS 5000, which begins next week, Tokong’s performance in Siargao positions him as a surfer to watch. Representative Francisco Jose Matugas II of Surigao del Norte’s 1st District conveyed his congratulations in a separate statement on Thursday, noting that Tokong’s victory has brought honor to both Siargao and the Philippines, showcasing the skill and competence of local surfers on the world stage.
