Post: Iloilo City Celebrates UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy Designation

Iloilo City - In a significant milestone for Philippine gastronomy, Iloilo City has been designated as the first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in the country. The city received this prestigious recognition on Tuesday, aligning with the global observance of World Cities Day.

According to Philippines News Agency, UNESCO acknowledged the city’s dedication to incorporating culture and creativity in its developmental strategies. Iloilo City now stands among 350 cities across more than 100 countries listed on the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), spanning various fields such as crafts and folk arts, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts, and music.

UNESCO highlighted the city's innovative practices in human-centered urban planning and its commitment to cultural and creative development. Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed his gratitude and shared the recognition with the citizens of Iloilo, emphasizing the city’s unique culinary offerings and the newfound international spotlight on Ilonggo cuisine.

“I share this award with the Ilonggos, like me, who love to cook our Ilonggo food. Now, we can be proud to say Ilonggo cuisine is taking the stage in the international gastronomy scene," Mayor Treñas stated.

In a previous interview, Mayor Treñas had underscored the importance of food as a significant attraction in the city, pointing out unique recipes that set Iloilo apart from other places. In 2020, the city published “Flavors of Iloilo,” a 208-page cookbook celebrating heirloom recipes and the culinary traditions of the Ilonggo people.

Looking ahead, Mayor Treñas emphasized the city’s commitment to innovation in gastronomy, aiming to introduce Iloilo as a global culinary destination, reflecting the rich cultural and traditional practices prevalent in Ilonggo society.

Maria Victoria Lara from the Iloilo City Local Economic and Investments Promotion Office (LEIPO) also shared insights into the impact of gastronomy on culture and daily life, explaining that a city recognized for its creative culinary scene showcases the profound influence of food on its community.

With this designation, Iloilo City joins other Philippine cities recognized by UNESCO, including Baguio, designated as a Creative City for craft and folk art in 2017, and Cebu, named a Creative City for design in 2019.
