Filipino Olympians Honored with Congressional Medals and Financial Incentives by House of Representatives
MANILA — The House of Representatives honored Filipino athletes from the 2024 Paris Olympics with congressional medals and substantial financial incentives on Wednesday, recognizing their achievements and contributions to the nation’s sports legacy. The event highlighted the athletes’ dedication and success on the international stage, awarding them as national heroes.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Congressional Medal of Excellence was awarded to double gymnastics gold medalist Carlos Yulo, reflecting his outstanding performance at the Olympics. Yulo also received PHP 6 million from the House for his gold medals, along with an additional PHP 8.010 million contributed by House members, totaling PHP 14.510 million in recognition of his achievements. Boxing bronze medalists Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio were each conferred the Congressional Medals of Distinction and received PHP 1 million each for their medals, plus an extra PHP 2.5 million each in contributions from House members, bringing their total to PHP 4 million each.
Speaker Romualdez emphasized that these accolades symbolize not only the athletes’ personal triumphs but also the collective support from their coaches, families, and the entire nation. He acknowledged the crucial role of community and national encouragement in the athletes’ journeys to the Olympics.
The Philippines was represented at the Paris Olympics by 22 athletes across nine sports. In addition to the medalists, the remaining 19 athletes were each awarded PHP 1 million, half of which was given before their departure for Paris and the remainder during the celebratory event.
The congressional reception serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to supporting and celebrating its athletes, acknowledging their hard work and the pride they bring to the Philippines on the world stage.
