Northern Cebu to Host New 15-MW Solar Power Plant
CEBU CITY – A new solar power plant, boasting a capacity of 15 megawatts, is set to rise in the northern part of Cebu province, announced Governor Gwendolyn Garcia. This development, a collaborative effort between Acciona Energia Global, Freya Renewables, and the Cebu provincial government, aims to enhance the region’s power generation capabilities and address the electrical needs of Panay Island and neighboring areas.
According to Philippines News Agency, the project emerges in response to recent power challenges faced by Panay Island, including widespread outages that had significant economic impacts, particularly highlighted by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in light of the PHP3.8 billion losses incurred by Iloilo province. The solar power facility, prioritized by the Department of Energy, is anticipated to significantly contribute to the government’s power generation efforts, especially in meeting the increasing demand in Central Visayas and adjacent regions. The plant will be situated on a 185-hectare site in Barangay Talisay, Daanbantayan town, with preliminary steps already underway, including discussions with 56 lot owners about the acquisition of land necessary for the construction of the solar panels.
