Dementia is not a Normal Aging Process

Dementia is a disease that affects the cognitive function of the brain which can affect memory, thinking, behaviour and feelings. Dementia is also the main cause of disability and dependency among the elderly. According to the Medical Officer, Geriatric Department of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, there are various types of dementia of which Alzheimer’s is the most common type and contributes to 60 to 70 percent of dementia cases. She said that dementia is not a result of the normal aging process, it is a disease that affects the individual’s memory, thinking, behaviour and emotions. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory and thinking, difficulty finding the right words or understanding what is being said, difficulty performing daily routine tasks, or changes in personality and mood.

 

The Lancet publication analysis of Global Burden of Disease study 2019, estimates that there are one thousand five hundred and seventy four cases in Brunei Darussalam and it is expected to increase by 365% to 7,317 by 2050. World Alzheimer’s Month is celebrated every September and this year’s theme is Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s.
