Post: All Saints’ Day Draws Unprecedented Crowd to Boac Cemetery

Boac, Philippines - The town’s single cemetery has witnessed its largest gathering of people since 2020, as thousands flocked to the Boac Catholic and Municipal Cemetery for All Saints’ Day celebrations. Municipal authorities have reported an overwhelming turnout, marking a significant increase in public participation for this annual event.

According to Philippines News Agency, the head of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Office (MDRRMO), the crowd inside the cemetery had surpassed 5,000 individuals by 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. "We have not experienced a crowd of this magnitude inside the cemetery since prior to the Covid-19 pandemic," he remarked, noting the logistical challenges posed by the event, including parking restrictions within 200 meters of the cemetery’s gates.

Law enforcement and order within the cemetery are being maintained by approximately 50 local police officers, supported by a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team from the Marinduque Police Provincial Office. Additional personnel have also been deployed by the municipal government to address any potential challenges that may arise during the day.

Manrique highlighted that a first aid team is on standby within the cemetery, and free provisions such as lugaw (rice porridge), bottled water, biscuits, candies, and candles are being distributed to visitors. These items were purchased with monetary donations from provincial and municipal leaders, local fraternities, and the Boy/Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

Regional security efforts have also been intensified, with the Police Regional Office 4B (Mimaropa) deploying over 1,000 police officers across various public cemeteries and columbaria in the region. Brig. Gen. Joel Doria, PRO 4B chief, emphasized the strict enforcement of rules, including bans on drugs, liquor, weapons, gambling paraphernalia, as well as karaoke and other loud music players. He assured the public of heightened security measures in public utility hubs, transport terminals, and major thoroughfares, preparing for the expected influx of passengers during the 'Undas' holidays.
