Post: Agriculture and Agrifood Industry in Positive Growth Trajectory

The agriculture and agrifood industry in Brunei has exhibited positive growth, as indicated by recent statistics. Gross national production from this sector has increased, reflecting a robust performance in various sub-sectors.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the gross commodity output of the sector reached 278 million dollars up till June of the current year. This marks an increase from the 273 million dollars recorded for the same period in the previous year. The livestock sector stands out as the most significant contributor to this growth.

In a special feature for Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen's Day, RTB News reported on the latest advancements in the local agriculture and agrifood industry. This sector, driven by crop and livestock farmers, has emerged as a key producer for the nation's food supply.

The livestock sector alone contributed 161 million dollars up till June this year, slightly less than the 162 million dollars recorded in the same period of the previous year. The poultry industry dominated this sector, contributing 74 million dollars. The crop sector added 32 million dollars, with vegetables leading at 17 million dollars. The agrifood industry, with its value-added products and livestock processes, contributed an additional 85 million dollars.

Presently, the country has achieved self-sufficiency in various food categories: 100 percent in poultry and eggs, 68 percent in tropical vegetables, 37 percent in tropical fruits, and 8.4 percent in rice.
