ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts Meeting

With the theme ‘Menggalakkan peranan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian ASEAN dalam Pasca COVID-19 untuk Pembangunan Mampan’, or ‘Encouraging the role of ASEAN Culture and Arts in Post-COVID-19 for Sustainable Development’, the 10th Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts, AMCA and Meetings related to Dialogue Partners were held via online. The meetings among others focused on the rapid increase in digital usage in many sectors which creates opportunities to improve the socio-cultural and economic sectors.

 

Joining the meeting was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. The meeting also shared concrete methods for mobilizing culture and the arts for post-pandemic recovery, including strengthening support for the development of creative industries and the use of new technologies to protect and preserve cultural heritage. The meeting continued with the presentation session of the “ASEAN City of Culture” recognition to the city of Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic for the period 2022 to 2024. Under the cooperation of Dialogue Partners Plus Three, the ministers took note of the progress of the implementation of the ASEAN Plus Three Culture and Arts Cooperation Work Plan 2022 to 2025, appreciation for China’s efforts in the implementation of the new Work Plan of ASEAN-China Cooperation in Culture, as well as Japan’s support in promoting ASEAN awareness and the efforts of the Republic of Korea in increasing cooperation in the field of arts and culture.

World Post Day Celebration

 

The Department of Postal Services held the 144th World Post Day celebration. The ceremony took place in Kampung Manggis, 26th October night.

 

Present was Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications. At the event, Medicine Delivery Service Using the Poslaju and the Red Stamp Package Pilot Project were launched. The ceremony coincided with the presentation of the Best Award in conjunction with World Post Day 2022, and souvenirs for Postal Workers who have served for 30 years and those who have retired.

44th AMAF Meeting and Related Meetings

The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak to the food, agriculture and forestry sectors, as well as the potential distruption to the food supply chain in the region is a major concern. Looking at this, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, during the 44th Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry, AMAF emphasised the importance of ASEAN’s focus towards economic recovery and digital economy integration, especially on issues relating to food crises as well as increases in food and agricultural input prices which have led to the increase in the cost of logistics and production.

 

The conference which was held in Lao People’s Democratic Republic via video conference was chaired by His Excellency Dr. Phet Phomphiphak, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The ministers emphasised on the importance of the food, agriculture, and forestry sector to ensure that essential, safe and nutritious produce can continue to reach ASEAN markets, including the continuous functioning of business activities and services to the food and agricultural systems. Also held were the 22nd Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry, AMAF plus 3; and the 7th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry, AIMMAF.

Flood Situation

Following the recent continuous heavy rains, several areas in the rural of Tutong District have been flooded. The water level of the river has overflowed into the areas of Kampung Benutan, Kampung Rambai, Kampung Kuala Ungar/Bangkuru as well as parts of Kampung Panchong and Kampung Layong causing several houses to be inundated and several roads made impassable for saloon cars and four-wheel drives.

 

Water level monitoring in areas that are often affected throughout the country has been carried out since the heavy rains began in early October 2022, with Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Home Affairs, visiting areas affected by floods in Tutong District. Various agencies including Penghulu Mukim and Village Heads are always on standby to ensure that the situation in the affected areas is under control. The Fire and Rescue Department continuously monitors the water level in the affected areas in Jalan Benutan with an MPV vehicle and a fire boat. The Second Battalion of the Royal Brunei Land Force, Royal Brunei Armed Forces also provided vehicles at several affected road areas. The Royal Brunei Police Force also regularly conducts patrols in affected areas and installed warning signs. The distribution of rations from the Department of Tutong Community Development, JAPEM was also carried out.

AIIB Board of Governors Annual Meeting

Themed, “Sustainable Infrastructure Towards a Connected World”, the 7th Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, AIIB Board of Governors Annual Meeting was held with the aim of reaffirming the critical role of infrastructure in supporting recovery, growth and connectivity. The meeting held online was attended by the Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, as the AIIB Governor for Brunei Darussalam.

 

During the Round Table Session of the AIIB Meeting, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah shared three priority areas towards a sustainable and resilient future, among them facilitating strategic partnerships between policy makers, business and multilateral development institutions in providing new opportunities. The meeting was chaired by the AIIB Governor for Mongolia.

73rd WHO Regional Committee Meeting

Communication for health, cervical cancer, mental health, non-communicable disease control and prevention, as well as basic health care were among the topics discussed at the 73rd Regional Committee Meeting of the World Health Organisation, WHO for the Western Pacific. The meeting which takes place in Manila, The Philippines, from 24th to 28th October 2022 is attended by Ministers of Health and representatives from 37 member countries of the WHO Western Pacific Region.

 

Leading Brunei Darussalam’s delegation at the meeting is Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health. Emergency preparedness which is the management of COVID-19 and access to medicines and vaccines, were discussed during a courtesy visit to Her Excellency Doctor Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Officer-in-charge for the Western Pacific Region. Also held were bilateral discussions on cooperation in the field of health with Malaysian Minister of Health; Advisor to the Minister of Welfare, Labor and Health of Japan; and the Officer-in-charge, Department of Health of the Republic of the Philippines. The Minister of Health also held discussions with Far Eastern University and made a visit regarding aspects of training in several fields of health sciences, especially the field of nursing training.

Christian leaders from many nations joined in prayers for peace and discussed ways to assist Christianity in fulfilling its destiny as a beacon of freedom, faith, and family throughout the world. They focused on ways to develop good character in youth and strengthen the institution of marriage, which are the keys to building stable and loving families. The conference’s theme was drawn from Ephesians 4:2-3: “With all humility and gentleness, with patience bearing with one another in love, make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Peace is when “all Christian clergy come together in front of heaven, by the love of Jesus Christ, the heavenly love,” said Rev. Masaichi Hori, chair of the PCLC Executive Committee, in his opening remarks at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, Philippines.

“We are foremost sons and daughters of God…we are one human family under God,” UPF International Director General Dr. Yun Young-ho said in remarks delivered by Dr. Julius Malicdem, vice chair of the PCLC Executive Committee.

UPF, a global non-profit organization with consultative status at the United Nations, promotes interreligious cooperation as part of its peacebuilding efforts. The PCLC and its affiliate, the World Christian Leadership Conference (WCLC), was co-founded by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon.

In Dr. Moon’s video remarks, she said that despite the suffering and chaos that has befallen humanity throughout history, God never gave up His dream of seeing His children live in the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.
