Fourteen Fatalities Reported Due to Severe Flooding and Landslides on Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island

MAKASSAR — Fourteen individuals have lost their lives following severe flooding and landslides on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island, affecting a population of approximately 20,000. The natural disasters occurred due to heavy rainfall that has plagued the region since last week.

According to Philippines News Agency, the National Agency for Disaster Management reported that torrential rains led to floodwaters rising up to three meters in some areas, significantly impacting thirteen sub-districts. These include Suli, Latimojong, West Suli, South Ponrang, Ponrang, Bupon, Larompong, South Larompong, Bajo, West Bajo, Kamanre, Belopa, and North Belopa. Rescue and relief teams have been deployed to assist those affected, with more than 1,385 people evacuated to safer locations. Additionally, the floods have damaged roads, a bridge, and multiple houses, with the Rongkong and Baliease rivers overflowing and causing further destruction.
