14th ACAI Governing Board Meeting Addresses Rising Non-Communicable Diseases in ASEAN

Berakas: Non-communicable diseases (NCD) pose a significant challenge for the older population in ASEAN, where they, along with mental health conditions, are the leading causes of disability, morbidity, and mortality. Unaddressed, these diseases could have a profound socioeconomic impact on the region, including Brunei Darussalam. This concern was highlighted at the 14th ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation (ACAI) Governing Board Meeting.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the meeting was officiated by Dr. Hjh Rafidah binti Hj Gharif, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, and chaired by Dr. Opart Karnkawinpong, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. The discussions emphasized the importance of enhancing public health actions across the life course while fortifying health systems, social systems, and the ecosystem to ensure that ASEAN citizens can age healthily, actively, and productively.

In this context, ACAI is strategically positioned to provide leadership and support to advance active ageing and innovation in the ASEAN region. The meeting, part of the International NCD Conference and Exhibition 2025, took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas on 8th October 2025.
