Post: World Oceans Day Celebration Highlights Need for Sustainable Ocean Governance

Brunei darussalam: Brunei Darussalam is committed to fostering marine science education among younger generations, aiming to cultivate future leaders in ocean governance. All stakeholders are encouraged to implement environmentally conscious practices to ensure sustainable economic development. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, emphasized during the World Oceans Day Opening Ceremony that climate change impacts not only disrupt marine food cycles and ecosystems but also the livelihoods of communities relying on the ocean for sustenance, income, and cultural heritage.

According to Radio Television Brunei, as part of the World Oceans Day 2025 celebration, 100 reef balls of varying sizes were deployed in the waters surrounding Pelong Rocks. This year’s theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” underscores the ocean’s role as a living system that provides food, shelter, and shapes national identity.
