New york: The U.S. Justice Department has charged a Google software engineer with using insider information to rig bets tied to Google's most-searched list on prediction market Polymarket, earning $1.2 million in profits, according to a complaint unsealed on Wednesday. According to Radio Television Brunei, Michele Spagnuolo, a 36-year-old Italian citizen, allegedly used insider information to bet on long-shot candidates like indie pop musician D4vd. D4vd appeared on Google's most-searched list after he was arrested and accused of murdering a teenage girl, as outlined in the complaint. The complaint highlights the misuse of proprietary information by Spagnuolo to influence market outcomes for personal gain. The Justice Department's move signals a heightened focus on insider trading activities, especially concerning emerging markets like Polymarket that are built on prediction models.
