GAZA CITY, Gaza - The dire situation of women in Gaza has prompted urgent calls from UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous for an immediate ceasefire in the region. During a statement made on Sunday, Bahous shed light on the severe hardships faced by women amidst the conflict, emphasizing the critical need for humanitarian relief.
According to Philippines News Agency, giving birth without access to basic necessities like water, food, and shelter. The ongoing Israeli military offensive since October 7, 2023, has had a devastating impact on the female population, with more than 9,000 women reported dead and over 23,000 injured. The conflict has also resulted in thousands of women missing, exacerbating the crisis.
The healthcare system in Gaza, significantly affected by the conflict, has left around 60,000 pregnant women without necessary medical care, putting countless lives at risk. The blockade imposed by Israel has pushed the population, especially in northern Gaza, to the brink of starvation, heightening the urgency for international intervention.
Bahous's appeal underscores the desperate need for a ceasefire to address the immediate humanitarian needs of women in Gaza and to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
