UN Chief Calls for Immediate Global Action on Climate Change

UNITED NATIONS—UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday called for immediate and unified action from the international community to address climate change, emphasizing the urgency of the next 18 months to limit global temperature rises.

According to Philippines News Agency, who delivered his message on the social platform X, the coming year and a half is crucial for the global fight against climate change. He stressed that the target is to keep the temperature rise to no more than 1.5°C (2.7°F) above pre-industrial levels, a threshold agreed upon under the Paris Agreement, to avoid severe climate-related disruptions.

The UN has consistently prioritized climate action, urging countries around the world to set and achieve more ambitious targets. “Together, let’s create a healthy planet and a safer future for us all,” Guterres added, calling for a collective effort to combat what he described as impending climate chaos if immediate actions are not taken.

The global initiative aims to mitigate catastrophic environmental effects by adhering to the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement, focusing on sustainable and inclusive strategies to reduce carbon footprints across nations.
