Transport Strike in Albay Has Limited Impact on Public Transportation
Albay, Philippines – The transport strike initiated by the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) on Monday did not significantly disrupt the public transport system in Albay province. This outcome was largely due to the decision of two local transport groups to continue their operations.
According to Philippines News Agency, Alex Bañares, president of the Tabaco-Legazpi Transport Cooperative (TALETRANSCO), expressed sympathy with the sentiments of the transport sector but maintained that their cooperative would continue serving the public, suggesting there are more effective ways to address grievances. Similarly, the Bicol Intercity Transport Cooperative (BITCoop) also chose not to participate in the strike, emphasizing their commitment to providing safe and orderly transport services to the community.
The Police Regional Office-5 (Bicol) is offering free transportation services to the public during the planned three-day strike. Lt. Col. Malu Calubaquib, PRO5 spokesperson, stated that at least 100 Philippine National Police (PNP) vehicles are deployed across the region for passenger transport, with an additional 127 patrol cars assigned for security and safety operations. Calubaquib assured the deployment of personnel on the ground to ensure public safety, including foot and mobile patrol, border control, and police presence. The Civil Disturbance Management Team has also been activated, ready to respond to any incidents during the protest.
