Sermon in Brunei Stresses Importance of Human Rights, Denounces Human Trafficking

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN — During a sermon titled “Upholding Human Rights” delivered on Friday, an Imam in Brunei Darussalam emphasized the criminality and severity of human trafficking, defining it as an organized cross-border crime that exploits the most vulnerable, including foreign workers, women, and children. The sermon aimed to raise awareness and call for action against these violations within the community.

According to Radio Television Brunei, human trafficking involves various forms of coercion including kidnapping, abuse of power, extortion, fraud, and force. He highlighted that the victims of such crimes are often deprived of their basic rights such as the freedom of movement, timely payment of salaries, holidays, and other legal entitlements guaranteed by the laws of Brunei and the employment contracts they have signed. The sermon was part of a broader initiative to educate the public on the importance of respecting and upholding human rights as per national and international standards.
