Post: Senator Imee Marcos Hails De Lima’s Bail as Proof of Philippine Justice System’s Independence

Manila – Senator Imee Marcos has cited the court's decision to grant bail to former Senator Leila De Lima as evidence that the Philippine justice system functions effectively. In her statement, Marcos asserted that this development should convince the International Criminal Court (ICC) that there is no need to continue its investigation into the reported killings during former President Rodrigo Duterte's drug war. She emphasized the independence of the judiciary and the irrelevance of personalities or political influence in legal processes.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos, the bail granted to De Lima reinforces her stance that the ICC lacks jurisdiction over Filipinos, particularly Duterte. This view aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s earlier declaration that the Philippines is 'disengaging' from any interaction with the ICC after it rejected the country's request to suspend its investigation, affirming the effectiveness of the national criminal justice system. Senator Ronald dela Rosa, while respecting the court's decision to allow De Lima to post bail, expressed his disagreement, stating that the charges against her, including alleged involvement in illegal drug activities, have a basis.

Catholic Church leaders have also responded to the court's decision. CBCP president Bishop Pablo David welcomed the news but lamented the delay in granting temporary freedom to De Lima. Former CBCP president Archbishop Socrates Villegas described the bail approval as both a legal victory and a blessing, highlighting De Lima's resilience against adversities.
