San Francisco, California: President Marcos Jr. Praises Overseas Filipinos for Upholding Philippines’ Image in US
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his gratitude to the Filipino community in the United States for fostering a positive image of the Philippines and its people. During a gathering with the Filipino community in San Francisco, California, President Marcos highlighted the significant role of Filipinos in the US in enhancing the Philippine economy and national reputation.
According to Philippines News Agency, In his address, President Marcos acknowledged the diverse reasons that led Filipinos to migrate to the United States, primarily for economic opportunities. He praised their continuous contributions to their homeland, despite living abroad, noting the positive image they have created for Filipinos in America. The US hosts approximately 4.2 million Filipinos and Filipino-Americans, forming a significant diaspora community.
Marcos commended overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) for their reputation of being reliable, helpful, hardworking, and trustworthy. He particularly lauded Filipino nurses, doctors, first responders, and essential workers for embodying Filipino virtues of compassion, companionship, and teamwork during the Covid-19 pandemic. The president remarked on the impactful role they played in providing care and support during the health crisis.
Furthermore, President Marcos reassured the Filipino community in the US of his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of all Filipinos. He outlined plans to adapt the Philippine economy to the post-pandemic global landscape, including digitalizing public services for more efficient government transactions.
Marcos emphasized the important role of the Filipino diaspora as ‘new heroes’ in shaping a better future for the Philippines. He encouraged unity and cooperation towards achieving a prosperous ‘New Philippines’ for future generations. The president’s visit to San Francisco was part of his participation in the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ meeting.
