Bandar Seri Begawan: The Ministry of Education has announced a significant revision and implementation of a new medical insurance protection policy for Permanent Residents and Immigration Pass Holders in Brunei Darussalam. Every holder of an Immigration Pass and Permanent Resident, who is a foreign national under the categories of Foreign Nationals Contributing to the Economy, Development, and Progress of the Country and Professional, is now required to obtain medical insurance in line with the revised insurance coverage and duration.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the primary objective of this policy update is to ensure that all Immigration Pass holders, employers, and Permanent Residents under the specified categories have adequate insurance coverage for medical treatment while residing or working in the country. The policy will be implemented in phases, with Phase One starting on July 1, 2025, covering Immigration Passes and Permanent Residents.
Phase Two will commence on January 1, 2026, extending the coverage to additional types of Immigration Passes. Employment Pass holders who are officials and staff of High Commissions and Foreign Embassies in Brunei, as well as foreign nationals entering the country under visa exemption arrangements or for transit purposes not exceeding 72 hours, are exempted from obtaining medical insurance coverage. Insurance purchased by immigrant workers before the policy's effective date will remain valid until the expiry of the respective coverage.
The Ministry has planned several briefing sessions for employers, including employment agencies and Domestic Service License holders, with dates to be announced later. For any inquiries or further information, individuals are advised to contact their respective departments.
