Post: Quezon City Road Renamed in Honor of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago

Quezon City - The BIR-Agham Road in Diliman, Quezon City, has been officially renamed Senator Miriam P. Defensor-Santiago Avenue, commemorating the late senator's significant contributions to the nation. The renaming ceremony took place on Saturday, nearly a month after Republic Act (RA) No. 11936, which authorized the renaming, lapsed into law.

According to Philippines News Agency, the road, stretching from North Avenue through Quezon Avenue to East Avenue, now bears the name of one of the Philippines' most notable legislators and public servants.

Vice President Sara Z. Duterte led the ceremony alongside Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Quezon City 1st District Councilor Juan Carlos Atayde, and family members of the late senator, including her sister Linnea Defensor-Evangelista and husband Narciso Santiago. In her speech, Vice President Duterte emphasized the road as a symbol of the nation's gratitude to Senator Defensor-Santiago for her unwavering fight for truth, legal brilliance, and her stance against government corruption. The Vice President expressed hope that the late senator's legacy would continue to inspire future generations. Senator Defensor-Santiago, often referred to as the "Iron Lady of Asia" and "Dragon Lady," was renowned for her roles in various capacities, including as the first Asian judge elected to the International Criminal Court and as a commissioner for the International Development Organization. She was also a Magsaysay Award recipient for Government Service and served in all three branches of the government. Senator Defensor-Santiago passed away at the age of 71 on September 29, 2016, after a battle with lung cancer.
