Post: President Marcos and US Vice President Harris Discuss Peace in the West Philippine Sea

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and US Vice President Kamala Harris have engaged in discussions focused on maintaining peace in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). This conversation occurred on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in San Francisco.

According to Philippines News Agency, In his video message on Facebook, President Marcos revealed that the dialogue with Harris centered on the current situation in the West Philippine Sea and potential strategies to de-escalate tensions. He mentioned his intention to also discuss the matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping, aiming to reduce conflicts in the region. President Marcos emphasized that the Philippine Coast Guard, military, and government are committed to promoting peace, with the primary goal of maintaining stability in the WPS.

The White House issued a statement affirming the US’ solidarity with the Philippines in response to China’s assertive actions in the Philippine waters. Vice President Harris reiterated the United States’ commitment to defending the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the South China Sea, citing the 1951 US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. The statement also noted that the two leaders reaffirmed their nations’ dedication to upholding international rules and norms, including in the South China Sea.

In addition to security concerns, the meeting between Marcos and Harris highlighted the robust alliance between the Philippines and the US. They discussed deepening security ties, expanding commercial and economic cooperation, and engaging through the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. A significant outcome of their discussions was the conclusion of a ‘123’ civil nuclear cooperation agreement, which will enhance the partnership in building a global clean energy economy and improving energy security. The agreement, initially announced by Harris in Manila in November 2022, will enable US exports of nuclear equipment and material to the Philippines, benefiting American workers and businesses. Harris also emphasized the significance of human rights and labor rights, including the safety of trade union leaders.

This meeting marks the fifth interaction between President Marcos and Vice President Harris, following previous discussions in Manila, the Naval Observatory, the East Asia Summit in Jakarta, and a trilateral meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
