Post: Philippines’ DILG Urges LGUs to Prepare for La Niña

Manila - The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in the Philippines called on local government units (LGUs) to update their disaster action plans and hazard maps in anticipation of the La Niña weather phenomenon. This directive was issued during a briefing on the program "Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon."

According to Philippines News Agency, it is crucial for local officials to frequently convene with their disaster risk reduction management councils and perform pre-disaster risk assessments specific to La Niña. Iringan stressed the importance of collaboration with the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), especially with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, to update local hazard maps that pinpoint areas vulnerable to rain-induced landslides and floods. As part of the DILG's "Operation Listo," an aggressive clean-up of estuaries and other water channels is being advocated to lessen flooding risks. This program aims to enhance LGU preparedness through a comprehensive government approach that includes setting local standards for disaster preparedness, response, and monitoring. Furthermore, Iringan highlighted the need to ensure that vital facilities, such as evacuation centers, comply with safety specifi cations and are not located in high-risk zones. He mentioned that schools should only be used as evacuation centers in extreme situations, with the necessary approvals from the Department of Education. This preparation is a response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to brace for La Niña, which is expected to bring above-normal rainfall to the Philippines.
