Philippines Could Achieve Insurgency-Free Status by 2028, Says Peace Adviser

QUEZON CITY – The Philippines could potentially achieve an insurgency-free status by the end of 2028, according to the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity.

According to Philippines News Agency, who spoke at the Saturday News Forum, the combined efforts of various national agencies and promising economic developments are key factors making this goal attainable. Galvez highlighted the proactive measures being taken across the country to address the root causes of conflict and improve local economies, which have been instrumental in diminishing insurgent activities. He noted that from over 80 active guerrilla fronts, operations have now been significantly reduced to a few regions including Samar, the Bicol Region, and Negros Island.

The success in regions like Davao, which was previously a stronghold of the New People’s Army, illustrates the progress being made. As of September 19, 2022, the Davao Region was declared cleared of insurgents, following similar declarations in the Ilocos Region and Zamboanga Peninsula. Galvez also emphasized the shift in discussions towards development and livelihood projects that aim to reintegrate former insurgents into mainstream society.

Additionally, Galvez mentioned that the government’s amnesty program has been pivotal in allowing former rebels to reclaim their political and civil rights, thus fostering a more inclusive approach to peace and reconciliation.
