Philippines Asserts Peaceful Stance is Not Weakness in West Philippine Sea Dispute

PUERTO PRINCESA—President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized on Sunday that the Philippines’ calm approach in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness. This statement was made during his visit to Camp General Artemio Ricarte, the base of the Western Command (Wescom), which oversees the country’s maritime territory.

According to Philippines News Agency, the recent incidents in the region, including a confrontation on June 17 where the China Coast Guard rammed and seized equipment from a Philippine vessel, should not be seen as the country yielding. He commended the Filipino soldiers for their restraint and reiterated the nation’s commitment to defending its sovereignty without instigating conflict. The President underscored that the Philippines aims to ensure a peaceful and prosperous life for its citizens, avoiding unnecessary conflicts.

The President’s remarks came as he addressed the troops of Wescom, known as ‘Defenders and Patriots of the Last Frontier.’ He expressed pride in the Armed Forces for demonstrating courage without compromising their compassionate nature. Marcos also took part in awarding the Order of Lapu-Lapu to the 79 Filipino soldiers involved in the recent Ayungin Shoal incident and provided reassurances of continuous support for the military and their families.

Marcos further stressed the importance of upholding the freedoms and rights of the Philippines in alignment with international law, maintaining a firm but peaceful posture in its diplomatic engagements. This stance, he noted, is rooted in the nation’s history and obligations to past and future generations.
