MANILA — In a significant move to combat air pollution, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines has partnered with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for a comprehensive air quality research initiative in Metro Manila and its adjacent areas. DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga announced the collaboration on Sunday, marking a pivotal step towards addressing environmental and public health concerns related to air quality in the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the initiative, named Airborne and Satellite Investigation of Asian Air Quality (ASIA - AQ), will feature NASA conducting scientific research flights over Metro Manila. These flights aim to gather critical data on the atmosphere, with a focus on understanding and mitigating air pollution. Engineers and air quality specialists from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the DENR will join these flights, gaining invaluable insights from NASA scientists.
The partnership brings together a diverse group of international and local experts, including teams from South Korea's National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), and the Philippine Space Agency. Additionally, academic institutions such as the Manila Observatory, Ateneo de Manila University, and the University of the Philippines are participating in the project.
Secretary Loyzaga highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating that the data collected from the research flights would play a crucial role in enhancing the DENR's programs aimed at improving air quality. This initiative is expected to lead to significant advancements in the understanding of air pollution, contributing to the development of accurate air quality models, effective policies, and better forecasts for the region.
The collaboration underscores the global nature of air quality challenges and the need for international cooperation to address these issues effectively. By leveraging NASA's advanced satellite technology, ground-based observations, and airborne missions, the ASIA - AQ project aims to provide a deeper understanding of Metro Manila's unique air quality problems and develop strategies for long-term improvement and sustainability.
