Post: Philippines Addresses Rice Wastage to Feed Millions Annually

Tuguegarao City - Efforts to reduce rice wastage in the Philippines, a key aspect of National Rice Awareness Month, were highlighted in activities from November 9 to 11 at a mall in Tuguegarao City. Dr. Marvin Luis, Department of Agriculture - Region 2 rice program coordinator, emphasized the significance of responsible rice consumption in the country.

According to Philippines News Agency, Luis revealed that food wastage data indicates enough rice is wasted annually to feed at least 2.5 million Filipinos.

In 2008, an average Filipino wasted approximately two tablespoons of cooked rice daily, equating to nine grams of uncooked rice. This wastage amounted to over 12 percent of imported rice, valued at PHP7.27 billion. Dr. Rose Mary Aquino, DA - Region 2 executive director, stressed the importance of healthy and proper rice consumption, including the benefits of eating brown and pigmented rice. The "BeRICEponsible" campaign encourages avoiding rice waste, eating brown rice, mixing rice with other healthy foods, supporting local rice products, and helping local farmers. Brown rice is known for being nutrient-rich, high in fiber, regulating blood sugar, promoting heart health, and aiding in maintaining a healthy weight. Representatives from the government and private sector in the region signed a pledge to advocate for responsible rice consumption. Dr. Roberto Busania, DA - Region 2 technical director for operations and extension, emphasized the need to support local rice farmers for sustainable rice production.
