MANILA — Representative Wilbert T. Lee of the AGRI Party-list emphasized the critical role of enhancing the agricultural sector and supporting farmers and fisherfolk to meet the Philippines' nutrition objectives as outlined in the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2023-2028.
According to Philippines News Agency, the empowerment of these vital groups—dubbed 'food security soldiers'—is essential for combatting nutritional issues in the country. "This 50th Nutrition Month, may we be reminded that the latest PPAN underscores food security as a tool to combat nutritional problems among Filipinos. Full support and protection of our farmers and fisherfolk - our food security soldiers - is a must to attain this goal," he stated. Lee linked this approach to the broader Philippine Development Plan which aims to boost productivity and resilience within the local agriculture and fisheries sectors to secure food availability and proper nutrition.
Lee argued for the need to uplift the agriculture sector to make food more affordable and accessible, thus improving nutritional access for more Filipino families. He also advocated for the passage of House Bill 3957, the 'Kadiwa Agri-Food Terminal Act,' which proposes the establishment of additional Kadiwa centers across the country. These centers would allow agricultural workers to sell their products directly to consumers, reducing costs and improving food availability.
"If more permanent Kadiwa centers are established nationwide, we not only support the livelihood of our farmers and fisherfolk, we also ensure the health of our countrymen who can now buy cheaper and nutritious food in their communities," Lee explained. He emphasized the broader social imperative: "Filipinos deserve accessible nutrition to help them live a healthier and better life. In a fair and just society, nobody should die of malnutrition and hunger or from lack of adequate food."
The PPAN, developed by the National Nutrition Council, serves as a comprehensive framework guiding various sectors in a coordinated effort to reduce malnutrition, with a strong focus on food security and the improvement of nutrition behaviors.
