Philippine Coast Guard Launches Rescue Operations in Flooded National Capital Region
NCR, MANILA—The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has initiated extensive search and rescue operations across the National Capital Region (NCR) in response to severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Carina and an intensified southwest monsoon.
According to Philippines News Agency, specialized teams have been actively conducting rescues in several critical areas including Mandaluyong City, San Juan City, Marikina City, and Sta. Mesa. The operations also included foot patrols along the Pasig River, particularly in San Juan and Marikina, to monitor rising water levels and respond promptly to any emerging crises.
The Coast Guard has mobilized seven teams from the PCG District NCR-Central Luzon, PCG Special Maritime, and PSC, rescuing a total of 1,356 individuals from 433 families to date. These efforts were coordinated with local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs) across Metro Manila, ensuring effective and timely support for those impacted by the flooding. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has previously noted that the flooding has affected major roads in the NCR, with water levels ranging from gutter-deep to chest-high, and some areas experiencing flooding as high as one-story buildings. This has led to significant disruptions, with some residents forced to wait for rescue on their rooftops.
