Philippine Athletes Set to Compete in 2024 World Masters Athletics Championships in Sweden
GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN — Eleven athletes from the National Masters and Senior Athletics Association of the Philippines (NMSAAP) have arrived in Gothenburg, Sweden, to participate in the World Masters Athletics Championships 2024, scheduled from August 13-25. This international event, dedicated to athletes aged 35 and older, will see seasoned competitors from the Philippines aiming for top honors.
According to Philippines News Agency, president of NMSAAP, the team is led by javelin thrower Danilo Fresnido, a gold medalist in the 2016 and 2018 championships. Other team members include John Aguilar, Severino Alacar, Benigno Marayag, Riezel Buenaventura, Nhea Ann Barcena, Judith Staples, Edward Kho, Brenda R. Zinampan, and Edward Obiena, who is the father of renowned pole vaulter EJ Obiena. The athletes will compete in various track and field events ranging from sprints and marathons to field events like the javelin, hammer throw, and pole vault.
“The NMSAAP team is optimistic about their chances of securing medals, drawing confidence from their previous performances. However, they are also mindful of the challenges and uncertainties that come with competing on the international stage,” stated Claravall. The competition begins on August 13, following an opening ceremony on August 12, with Staples and Zinampan competing in the women’s 100 meters dash and Aguilar in the men’s 100m category.
The participation of the Philippine team is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), as well as several sponsors including Senator Bong Go, PSC commissioner Bong Coo, and various sports brands. The team is accompanied by PSC director Merly Ibay.
The 2024 World Masters Athletics Championships is expected to set a new record with over 8,000 athletes participating. Host nation Sweden has the highest number of entries with 1,883 participants, indicating a highly competitive event ahead.
