Post: Philippine Athletes Begin Quest for Olympic Glory in Paris

PARIS — The Philippine team's campaign at the Paris Olympics kicks off this Saturday, with gymnast Carlos Yulo and rower Joanie Delgaco spearheading the nation's efforts less than a day after the Games' historic outdoor opening ceremony.

According to Philippines News Agency, Yulo will compete in the men's artistic gymnastics qualification subdivision 2 at 9:30 p.m. Philippine time in Bercy Arena. Earlier in the day, Delgaco will take to the waters for the women's single sculls heat at 3 p.m. at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium. The following day, Sunday, will see fencer Samantha Cantantan start her bid in the women's individual foil at 3:30 p.m. at the Grand Palais, while gymnasts Aleah Finnegan, Levi Ruivivar, and Emma Malabuyo are set to participate in the qualification subdivision 3 at 8:50 p.m.

The Philippine contingent in Paris includes notable athletes like pole vaulter EJ Obiena, boxers such as Tokyo 2020 silver medalists Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, and a strong lineup in weightlifting, judo, golf, hurdles, and swimming. The opening day featured Petecio and Paalam bearing the Philippine flag during the parade along the Seine River, passing iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum.

The event is particularly significant as it marks the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Games, also held in Paris, which was the first Olympic appearance for the Philippines. This year’s Games, declared open by French President Emmanuel Macron, will see 10,500 athletes compete in 329 events through August 11. The Philippines, which achieved its first Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 thanks to weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, is looking to build on that success.

Security is tight, with 75,000 police, soldiers, and private guards deployed for the duration of the Games, which will conclude with the women's basketball gold medal game on August 11. Additionally, the upcoming Paralympics, scheduled from August 28 to September 8, will feature Filipino athletes in swimming, taekwondo, archery, and athletics.
