Pasig Diocese Initiates Beatification Process for Laureana ‘Ka Luring’ Franco

PASIG CITY, Philippines — The Diocese of Pasig has officially commenced the Cause of Beatification and Canonization for Laureana ‘Ka Luring’ Franco, a revered catechist known for her devout service and contributions to the Catholic faith. Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara has issued a circular calling upon the faithful to support and contribute any pertinent information that could aid in Franco’s cause toward sainthood.

According to Philippines News Agency, the diocese is advocating for the canonization of Servant of God, Laurena “Ka Luring” Franco, recognizing her significant role as a catechist in Hagonoy, Taguig City. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in the comprehensive process of documenting Franco’s life and virtues, which exemplify her candidacy for sainthood. The bishop has encouraged the submission of authenticated documents and personal testimonies to the diocese’s chancellor, Father Joeffrey Brian Catuiran.

The initiative gained formal momentum with the publication of an edict on February 24, 2024, appointing Erickson Javier, Doctor of Ministry, as the Postulator for Franco’s beatification and canonization causes. This appointment marks the beginning of the formal process as mandated by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

Franco, born on July 4, 1936, and deceased on October 17, 2011, was the eldest among eight siblings and dedicated much of her life to teaching catechism to public school students. As a devoted member of the Legion of Mary, she was recognized for her exceptional service with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award from Saint John Paul II in 1990, recommended by the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin. Additionally, in 2002, she was honored with the Mother Teresa Award for her contributions to promoting peace, equality, and social justice.

The Diocese of Pasig’s endeavor to elevate Franco to sainthood underscores her profound impact on the Catholic community and her enduring legacy as a beacon of faith and service.
