Northern Samar Commemorates 350th Death Anniversary of Historian Francisco Ignacio Alcina

PALAPAG, NORTHERN SAMAR – This week, Northern Samar province marked the 350th death anniversary of Francisco Ignacio Alcina, a Spanish Jesuit priest and historian renowned for his comprehensive studies of Visayan history, culture, and traditions. Celebrations included the unveiling of national historical markers and a series of commemorative events emphasizing Alcina’s contributions to Philippine historiography.

According to Philippines News Agency, The 2024 national conference on Alcina, held at the University of the Eastern Philippines, was themed “Situating Alcina’s Role in Philippine Local History.” According to Rolando Borrinaga of the Philippine National Historical Society, Alcina’s work has significantly broadened the understanding of Philippine history beyond mere political and administrative developments, especially highlighting the cultural depth of the Visayas region.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), along with local government units and various historical societies, spearheaded the commemorative activities. Alcina’s pioneering work, which was extensively documented during his time in Palapag and later published as Alcina’s History of the BisaVisayas, remains a crucial resource for understanding the pre-colonial and colonial periods of the Visayas.

NHCP commissioner Eloisa de Castro noted, “Alcina’s efforts in laying the foundations of Christianity link the past and present, maintaining a vibrant Christian practice in Northern Samar today.” Alcina’s extensive documentation covers various aspects of Visayan life, including language, arts, and ancient traditions, providing a valuable legacy for future generations of historians and cultural scholars.
