NIA Commences Sale of P29/kg Rice to Combat Inflation and Boost Food Security

MANILA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has launched a new initiative under the National Irrigation Administration’s (NIA) contract growing program to sell rice at PHP29 per kg. This move aims to provide affordable rice options to consumers near irrigators’ associations, assist in controlling inflation, and support local farmers.

According to Philippines News Agency, the program will offer low-cost rice at “Kadiwa sa NIA” sites across Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Caraga regions. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to address food security and affordability issues. The affordable rice, sourced from the harvests of local irrigators’ associations, will be available with a purchase limit of 10 kg per buyer, prioritizing vulnerable groups including beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), senior citizens, persons with disability (PWDs), and solo parents.

NIA Administrator Eduardo Guillen highlighted that the program is a significant element of the government’s convergence strategy to achieve food security goals and support local agricultural sectors. He noted the positive reception from local farmers who benefit from secure sales channels and responsive support from NIA, including the early distribution of farm inputs and timely provision of irrigation water.

Furthermore, the DA is planning to expand the availability of the P29 rice and Rice for All programs. New Kadiwa sites are expected to open in various locations, including Metro Manila areas like Pasay, San Juan, and Malabon, and in provinces such as Rizal, Cavite, Cebu, Samar, Sulu, and Maguindanao. Currently, these programs are active in 17 locations, operating from Thursday to Saturday each week.
