Misamis Oriental Marks 94th Anniversary with ‘Kuyamis’ Festival and Coconut Plant Inauguration
CAGAYAN DE ORO: Misamis Oriental is celebrating its 94th founding anniversary with the Kuyamis Festival, a tribute to the abundant young coconuts in the region, highlighted by the inauguration of a PHP150-million coconut processing plant. The new facility, a significant addition to the province’s coconut industry, is operated by the First Integrated Community Cooperative in Balingasag, the largest cooperative in Northern Mindanao.
According to Philippines News Agency, the festival’s events include the Miss Kuyamis 2024 beauty pageant, with unprecedented participation from all 23 towns and two component cities of Misamis Oriental. The pageant’s coronation night is scheduled for Jan. 10 at the LimKetKai Atrium. Additional festivities feature street dancing on Jan. 11 and the awarding of a booth contest on Jan. 12 at the Pelaez Sports Complex.
During the festival, Governor Peter Unabi is set to deliver his provincial address on Jan. 12 at the same venue. His address will focus on key developmental programs targeting employment, livelihood, education, and housing. These initiatives aim to tackle the province’s poverty incidence rate, which currently stands at 25 percent.
