Negros Oriental Coffee Shops Embrace ‘Hanging Coffee’ Initiative for Community Support
NEGROS ORIENTAL — In a heartwarming display of community support, at least 21 local coffee businesses in Negros Oriental have joined the “Hanging Coffee” project, which allows patrons to purchase a coffee for themselves and pay for an additional cup to be given to someone in need.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) focal person for the coffee industry in the region, Café Estacion was the first to implement the project following the commitment signing last Friday. “Soon after the commitment signing last Friday, Café Estacion immediately put up a sign board for the Hanging Coffee project where one person orders one coffee but pays for two,” Sumanoy told the Philippine News Agency on Monday. She noted that the initiative was inspired by similar projects abroad that harness small acts of kindness to provide free coffee to those who cannot afford it.
The project officially launched during the opening ceremony of the Dumaguete Coffee Festival Y2, held at a local mall on July 19. Sumanoy emphasized that the initiative not only fosters a sense of solidarity within the community but also boosts sales for participating coffee shops.
Participating venues include Brewedways Coffee, Black and Copper (Mountain Origins), Coffee Collective, Cafe Mystika, 85°Artisan Café, Holy Cup, The Cabin Blend, Brewing Site, Cafe Trimo, Overdose Café, Kava, Skyespresso, Caffeine Co, Kapeng Local, and Baslay Highland Brew, each contributing to the communal effort by offering patrons the opportunity to support both the local economy and individuals in need through their coffee purchases.
