NEDA Board Approves New Digital Infrastructure Project and Modifies Nine Existing Initiatives
MANILA — The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board, led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., has given the green light to a significant new digital infrastructure project designed to enhance broadband connectivity across the Philippines, particularly in underserved regions.
According to Philippines News Agency, the board approved the Philippine Digital Infrastructure Project (PDIP), with a budget of PHP16.1 billion, which will be financed through official development assistance from the World Bank. The project seeks to boost the country’s broadband capacity, reduce the digital divide, and strengthen cybersecurity measures.
The PDIP is part of the broader National Broadband Program and includes the construction of a comprehensive public broadband network consisting of a backbone network, middle-mile network, last-mile access network, network security, and project management support. NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan emphasized that the initiative would facilitate access to digital and technological services, thus expanding economic opportunities and connectivity for Filipinos.
Additionally, the board approved adjustments to nine ongoing infrastructure projects, seven of which are key components of the Infrastructure Flagship Projects portfolio. These projects include the Local Governance Reform Project, Infrastructure Preparation and Innovation Facility, New Cebu International Container Port Project, Light Rail Transit Line 1 South Extension Project, Malolos-Clark Railway Project, Tranche 1, Metro Manila Flood Management Project, Phase 1, Reconstruction and Development Plan for a Greater Marawi, Stage 2, Improving Growth Corridors in Mindanao Road Sector Project, and the Panguil Bay Bridge Project. Modifications pertain to project scope, cost, extensions of implementation periods, and loan validity.
Balisacan stated that these adjustments are essential for the timely and effective completion of these projects, aiming to enhance national infrastructure, connectivity, and job creation.
