Post: Misamis Oriental Invests PHP5 Million to Boost Environmental Protection

MISAMIS ORIENTAL — The local government of Misamis Oriental has dedicated over PHP5 million to recruit additional personnel dedicated to the protection of the province's natural areas. This financial commitment aims to enhance the safeguarding of vital ecological zones through the end of the year.

According to a memorandum of agreement signed on Monday morning by Governor Peter Unabia and Arleigh Adorable, Executive Director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Northern Mindanao (DENR-10), the province will see an influx of new environmental protectors. "Under the MOA, the DENR will hire 25 forest protection officers, 15 land examiners, four 'bantay lasang' or forest watchers, and two 'bantay dagat' or sea watchers," explained Governor Unabia. These roles are pivotal in monitoring and maintaining the health of the region’s protected lands and waters.

The initiative prioritizes the conservation of watersheds, which are critical to the water supply not only for Misamis Oriental but also for neighboring areas that rely on water from river tributaries originating in Bukidnon province. Furthermore, Governor Unabia highlighted the importance of collaboration with Indigenous Peoples communities living near these watersheds, which are essential for the overall ecological health and water security of the region.

Unabia underscored the urgency of these efforts by referencing a report from the United States Agency for International Development, which signals a looming water crisis in the province exacerbated by broader climate challenges. "Yes, we are already dealing with a climate crisis, but when it comes to water, we need to intervene as soon as possible," said Unabia.
