Post: Metro Dumaguete Water Opens New Pumping Station to Secure Water Supply in Dumaguete Amid El Niño

DUMAGUETE- The inauguration of the new Pumping Station (PS) 21 and Transmission Pipe Bridge by Metro Dumaguete Water (MDW) promises to enhance the water supply in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, particularly during the El Niño phenomenon. Angelo David Berba, MDW's Chief Operating Officer, announced this development following the facility's ceremonial activation in Barangay Cadawinonan on Friday.

According to the Philippines News Agency, the newly operational pumping station, which connects to the transmission pipeline in Barangay Candauay, is capable of producing up to 3 million liters of water per day. This increase in supply is set to benefit over 5,000 households, approximately 20,000 residents, in the Batinguel, Taclobo, Motong, and Daro areas. The PHP 30-million facility, which began operating on January 11, is designed to ensure a reliable water supply in Dumaguete City amidst the challenging conditions brought about by the El Niño.

Berba explained that the water source, originating from nearby Valencia town, is abundant and sustainable, with underground systems flowing towards Dumaguete. He mentioned that before the establishment of PS 21, MDW's water production was up to 45 million liters per day, catering to the varying needs of its customers. Despite covering about 95 percent of the city's water supply needs last year, there was a noted shortage during peak hours.

Further addressing water supply concerns, another pumping station in Barangay Talay is expected to become operational within the year, aiming to fully meet Dumaguete City's water requirements. Berba emphasized MDW's commitment to excellence and community welfare, viewing PS 21 as a critical step in ensuring a continuous supply of clean and safe water for Dumaguete residents. He also highlighted this project as part of multiple joint initiatives planned with the Dumaguete City Water District (DCWD) for 2024 and beyond.

MDW, a joint venture between DCWD and Metro Pacific Water, has been operating since February 2021, focusing on improving water services in Dumaguete and surrounding areas.
