Masoud Pezeshkian Wins Iranian Presidential Run-off
TEHRAN — Iranian reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has emerged victorious in the presidential run-off, securing his position as the ninth president of Iran.
According to Philippines News Agency, the spokesman for the Islamic Republic’s Election Office, Pezeshkian garnered 16.384 million votes, accounting for 53.6 percent of the 30.530 million total votes cast. His victory was declared on the IRIB TV channel. In contrast, Pezeshkian’s conservative opponent, Saeed Jalili, received 44.3 percent of the vote, totaling 13.538 million votes. The election office also noted that the total voter turnout was 49.8 percent.
The presidential election, held on Friday, was necessitated by the sudden death of Iran’s previous president, Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash in May along with seven others. This electoral event has marked a significant transition in Iran’s political landscape.
