Post: Manila Zoo to Remain in Current Location, City Executives Confirm

MANILA — City officials have confirmed that the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden, commonly known as Manila Zoo, will not be relocating, with plans instead to enhance the current facility to match standards of Southeast Asian zoos.

According to Philippines News Agency, the city government is committed to developing a future for Manila Zoo that relies on expert zoo management and respects its significance to local heritage. Mayor Lacuna emphasized the importance of the zoo's location in Manila, both as part of the city's heritage and as a cherished site for generations of Filipinos. She mentioned that the decision aligns with awaiting the New Government Procurement Act, which will set guidelines for future enhancements at the zoo. Lacuna also disclosed plans to assemble a panel of experts to gather research and stakeholder input, explicitly stating that relocation of the animals or using Masungi Georeserve as an alternative site is not being considered.

Vice Mayor John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto supported Lacuna's statements, affirming the zoo’s role as a key accessible attraction within Manila and asserting the city's commitment to its upkeep. "We will not allow Manila Zoo to be out of Manila. We are taking great care of it," Nieto said, reinforcing the local government's dedication.

Additionally, 5th District Rep. Irwin Tieng, whose district includes the zoo's location in Malate, responded to concerns raised by Senator Francis Tolentino about the welfare of the zoo's animals. Tieng highlighted ongoing improvements, including new animal enclosures, a water filtration system, and a modern sewerage treatment plant, aimed at enhancing animal welfare and visitor experience. Tieng reiterated the city's stance, "We do not want the zoo to move from the city because not everyone can travel to Masungi to see animals. We want it to stay here in Manila."

These statements were in response to a recent proposal by Senator Tolentino to relocate the zoo to Masungi Georeserve in Baras, Rizal, citing the suboptimal conditions caused by urban environmental factors at the current site.
