Legislator Urges Inclusion of West Philippine Sea Issue, UNCLOS Ruling in National Curriculum

MANILA — A legislative push to include the territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) arbitral ruling in the Philippines’ national history curriculum has been initiated by a party-list representative.

According to Philippines News Agency, Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Party-List Representative Margarita Nograles, the inclusion of these topics would provide students with a critical understanding of Southeast Asia’s geopolitical dynamics and the significance of adhering to international law. Nograles emphasized the importance of educating Filipino youth about the country’s territorial claims and the 2016 UNCLOS arbitral ruling, which confirmed the Philippines’ sovereign rights over areas contested by China. She argued that knowledge of these issues is essential for fostering a well-informed citizenry and enhancing national pride and responsibility.

Nograles also expressed strong support for the appointment of Senator Sonny Angara as the incoming Secretary of Education. She lauded his extensive public service record, commitment to educational advocacy, and leadership skills, expressing confidence that under his guidance, the educational system would effectively meet the nation’s evolving needs.
