La Union Establishes PHP3 Million Trust Fund to Support El Niño-Affected Farmers and Fisherfolk

LA UNION — In response to the ongoing challenges posed by the El Niño phenomenon, the provincial government of La Union has established a PHP3 million emergency trust fund to aid registered farmers and fisherfolk affected by the dry spell.

According to Philippines News Agency, the fund is intended to provide financial support for insurance, the purchase of farm equipment, and the acquisition of vegetable seeds that are resistant to drought.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), under the direction of officer-in-charge Sharon Viloria, is responsible for validating the eligibility of those applying for assistance. Viloria detailed that the OPAG has been proactive in mitigating the impact of the dry conditions by advising farmers to plant short-gestation and drought-resistant crops well in advance of the dry spell. This strategy aims to reduce water consumption and ensure crop yields during adverse weather conditions.

Additionally, some rice farmers in the province have begun cultivating alternative crops such as corn and mung beans, which are less water-intensive, as a means to lessen the effects of El Niño. OPAG has also procured vegetable seeds and farming tools, scheduled for distribution this month, to further support local farmers.

Moreover, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian is contributing to the effort by offering free deworming services and distributing vitamins and supplements to both small and large ruminants, ensuring their health is maintained throughout the dry spell.
