Korean Navy Renovates Child Development Center in Legazpi City as Part of Pacific Partnership 2024

LEGAZPI CITY — The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) officially completed the renovation of the Naval Forces Southern Luzon (NFSL) Child Development Center in Barangay Rawis, turning over the updated facility on Monday as part of their commitment to the Pacific Partnership 2024 initiative.

According to Philippines News Agency, commander of the ROKN Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1, the project involved extensive work over a week, costing over USD 5,000 (approximately PHP 200,000). “We conducted three types of assignments for this facility; the first was repairing the roof, outdoor painting, and inside changing. We incorporated it with the Philippine Navy and made a master plan. We hope that the kindergarten pupils will enjoy this place of learning,” said Lt. Seo. The renovation of the 200-square-meter facility reflects the ROKN’s belief in the foundational role of education for children, who Lt. Seo describes as “the future” who “need to study a lot.”

In addition to the child development center, the ROKN also made improvements to Sawangan Park and Legazpi Elementary School, extending their support beyond a single project. The team provided not only structural renovations but also donated essential supplies like electric fans and coloring materials to enhance the learning environment for children.

Lt. Kim Paulo Lopez, Chief of the NFSL Public Affairs Unit, emphasized the importance of the newly renovated center in supporting early childhood education. “Daycare centers play a crucial role in the development and nurturing of our children at the start of their educational journey,” he remarked. The facility, which had been closed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, is now set to reopen, with local authorities coordinating to meet all necessary operational requirements.

Capt. Edwin Nera, NFSL’s acting commander, expressed gratitude towards the Pacific Partnership 2024 and the ROKN for their contributions. “Your hard work and dedication created a place where our children can grow, learn, and thrive. This center is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a testament to the power of collaboration and enduring bonds that unite us. Thank you for your unwavering support, your friendship, and for helping us build a brighter future for our children,” he stated.

The Pacific Partnership, recognized as the largest annual multinational humanitarian assistance and disaster relief preparedness mission in the Indo-Pacific, will continue its activities in Legazpi City until August 14.
