Kalanggaman Island in Leyte Closes Temporarily for Environmental Recuperation

PALOMPON, Leyte — Kalanggaman Island, a popular tourist destination in Eastern Visayas, is temporarily closed this week for a “recuperation break” to mitigate the environmental impacts of tourism, announced the local government of Palompon, Leyte. This five-day closure, which began on July 22 and will extend until July 26, aims to preserve the island’s pristine ecosystems.

According to Philippines News Agency, this initiative is part of a broader effort to adopt sustainable travel practices and allow the natural environment to recover. “The break from tourism activities is crucial for maintaining the island’s beauty and ecological health,” the statement said. The local government is also emphasizing the importance of sustainable tourism practices that align with environmental conservation.

During the closure, the local government, along with various government agencies and private sector volunteers, will undertake a clean-up drive and facility rehabilitation on the island. “This period is not only about rest for the island but also about active engagement in eco-friendly activities,” the local government noted, encouraging participants to practice responsible stewardship of the island’s natural resources.

Kalanggaman Island, known for its bird-like shape and long sandbars, is a favored spot for relaxation, swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving, offering visitors a picturesque view with its powder-white sands and crystal-clear waters. It is accessible by a 45-minute boat ride from Palompon town or two hours from Malapascua Island in Cebu.

This temporary closure reflects a growing awareness and initiative to balance tourism with environmental preservation, ensuring that Kalanggaman Island remains a sustainable and breathtaking destination for future visitors.
