International Counselling Symposium Emphasizes Role of Grassroots Leaders in Mental Health.
Bandar Seri Begawan: The voice of grassroots leaders brings influence, actions become role models and empathy can give hope to those facing life’s challenges. Thus, the role of grassroots leaders such as village heads, penghulu mukim, youth representatives, religious leaders, and counselors is crucial as the main reference in the community, emphasized the Minister of Home Affairs during the International Counselling Symposium 2024, this morning. According to Radio Television Brunei, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman stated that the symposium offers a valuable opportunity to empower grassroots leaders with practical skills and knowledge. It is an opportunity to think of a way to intensify mental health initiatives, identify available resources, and create a safe space for dialogue in the community.
Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman highlighted that addressing mental health issues should not be solely shouldered by health professiona
ls. Religious leaders bring the strength of faith, village leaders offer leadership and trust, youth representatives symbolize endurance and determination, while counselors provide the needed support and expertise. Together, they form a network of strong influence capable of transforming the mental health landscape in Brunei Darussalam.
With the theme ‘From Awareness to Action: Mobilising Grassroots with Counselling Skills to Address Mental Health Challenges,’ the symposium is organized by the Brunei Darussalam Counselling Association, PERKAB. The event also features a keynote presentation titled “Community Mental Health.” The symposium, which continues until this Thursday, is taking place at the Civil Service Institute, Rimba.
