Post: Indigenous Peoples Open to Development Projects, Says NCIP Chair

Baguio City - The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) has expressed openness to mining and other development projects, provided that indigenous peoples (IPs) are consulted at all stages. NCIP Chairperson Jennifer Pia Sibug-Las, speaking at the Community Relations Conference of the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) in Camp John Hay on Tuesday, emphasized the importance of consultation for IPs regarding land use and rights.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sibug-Las stated that mining companies and development projects have the potential to enhance livelihoods and economic stability for IPs. She highlighted the need for sustainable practices and the empowerment of communities, fostering self-determination, and enhancing the capacity for decision-making in matters affecting their lives and resources. The NCIP chairperson stressed the importance of being treated as equals in the country's development. She urged companies to prioritize cultural sustainability, safety, security, and stability in their operations. Sibug-Las, a Manobo princess and the commissioner in charge for Central Mindanao, acknowledged the limitations of NCIP in improving conditions for IPs and Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs). She recognized the role of industry players and community relations officers as key contributors to a better future for both the IPs and the broader Filipino community.
