MANILA – The Indian government has proposed a donation of seven helicopters to the Philippines to enhance the Philippine Coast Guard's (PCG) rescue and humanitarian capabilities.
According to Philippines News Agency, on Sunday cited President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. praising India's offer as a significant boost to the nation's rescue and humanitarian potential. The president underlined the importance of building the country's capacity, specifically within the coast guard and search and rescue operations.
The commitment was discussed during a recent courtesy call by the Indian Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Shambhu Kumaran, who confirmed ongoing negotiations between the Indian government, the PCG, and the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Ambassador Kumaran mentioned the mutual interest in enhancing the bilateral relationship between the Philippines and India.
The intended helicopters, designed for India's Navy and Coast Guard, are well-equipped for more intensive security operations and have a higher capacity for passengers and cargo. Kumaran emphasized the helicopters' suitability for the PCG's expanding role in national security and humanitarian missions.
