Post: Ilocos Norte Fisherfolk Benefit from Sustainable ‘Lambaklad’ Fishing

LAOAG CITY — Fisherfolk in Barangay Dilavo, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, are experiencing a significant shift in their livelihoods thanks to the adoption of the 'lambaklad' fishing method, a project supported by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). This innovative approach, inspired by Japanese fishing technology, employs large nets and ropes for sustainable fishing approximately 200 meters from the shore. The method is noted for its environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness, as it allows small fish to escape and utilizes non-motorized boats, reducing fuel consumption.

According to Philippines News Agency, the 'lambaklad' project has transformed the fishing activities in the area, making them more efficient and less dependent on open sea ventures. Joel Queddeng, president of the Dilavo Fishermen Association, and James Castillo, a local fisherman, shared insights into the project's impact, highlighting the ease of operation and the significant savings on fuel. Vanessa Dagdagan, a senior aquaculturist with BFAR-Ilocos Norte, reported that since its inception in 2023, the project has yielded tons of high-value fish species, providing a stable income for the community. The association's sharing scheme further ensures the sustainable distribution of income among its members, with plans for expansion and maintenance underway.
